Faster Drive: Uploading Large Files

Clio Single File Upload Limit

Clio's cloud provides unlimited storage for files, but when it comes to a single file, Clio has a 5GB maximum.Any single file over 5GB must be split up or stored somewhere else.

Faster Law recommends keeping large files you plan to work with stored on your PC or a local server, while maintaining a backup copy of the file in Clio.

When working with large files that are stored in the cloud, it can sometimes take several minutes (or longer!) to open a file since the data needs to be transferred from the cloud to your computer before the file can open. This delay is directly related to your internet speed.

Storing Large Files in Clio

In order to store large files in Clio that exceed the 5GB single file upload limit, the file will need to be broken up into smaller pieces that do not exceed 5GB each. The easiest way to do this is by creating a spanned zip file. This can be done using a file archiver such as WinRAR or 7-Zip. These programs are available for free download, but any file archiver may be used:

Creating a spanned zip file with WinRAR

Once WinRAR is installed on the computer, right click the large file and select "Add to archive... "

A WinRAR window will open. In this window select the "Split to volumes, size" drop-down and select from the choices provided or enter your own file size. This setting determines the size of each file WinRAR will split the large file into. Once a selection is made, click OK.

WinRAR will execute the command and produce multiple files of the selected size.

Opening any of the files that WinRAR has generated will automatically piece them back together and open the full file that has been split.

Now that the large file has been split into smaller files you can upload each separate file into Clio without exceeding the 5GB single file limit. Just move all files into a folder and upload to the desired location in Clio.
