The steps listed in the resolution section of this article are advanced and should only be performed by an IT professional.

Issue:

When opening a document using Browser Link, the user will receive a prompt to confirm that they want to use Faster Suite Browser Link to open the document.  This prompt appears every time a document is opened with no option to always allow the action.

Cause:

In Google Chrome versions 76.x and prior, there was an option to "Always open these types of links in the associated app".  In version 77.x and later, Google Chrome has removed this feature and stated that always opening specific types of links could be a potential security risk, as it would allow applications to open associated links from any website without confirmation.

Resolution

Since Faster Suite only uses the ALPHADRIVE:// protocol to open links from Clio and this protocol is specific to Clio and Faster Suite, it is safe to always allow Browser Link to open ALPHADRIVE:// links.  User can manually regarding-enable the checkbox in Chrome to "always allow" using the following steps.  This process should only be performed by an IT professional:

  1. Open the registry editor (regedit.msc)

2. Navigate to Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Google\Chrome
3. Create a REG_DWORD entry called ExternalProtocolDialogShowAlwaysOpenCheckbox and set the value to 1
4. Relaunch Chrome

After performing these steps, the next time a user clicks on a document in Clio, the prompt should contain a checkbox to always allow that action.  After checking the box and hitting okay the first time, all future prompts will be disabled and documents will open without having to confirm the action.
