Connecting to Outlook: Web Version

Modified on Mon, 6 Nov, 2023 at 5:16 PM

Microsoft has begun offering a Web-version of Outlook to some users.  This new version is essentially a web applet running the browser version of MS Outlook.  Because the new version is essentially a browser, the ability for third party applications to integrate with it is greatly reduced.  As a result, the browser based "new" version of MS Outlook is not compatible with Faster Mail.

How can I tell if I'm using the Web version of Outlook?

The Web version of Outlook has a very different look than the desktop application.

Below is an image of the Web version of Outlook that is not supported.

Below is a screen shot of the regular Outlook desktop application which is supported.

Continued Support

The Outlook desktop application will continue to function normally.  When you install the update, you will see a new toggle button on the top right of your MS Outlook window.  If you turn off the "Try the New Outlook" switch the desktop application will launch and Faster Mail will function as expected.

How to revert to Classic Outlook

Below is a Microsoft help article with information on how to use the classic version of MS Outlook instead of the new version. Revert to Classic Outlook

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Preferences

Open RegEdit.exe and navigate to the registry hive shown above.  Set the value of UseNewOutlook to 0.  Close and relaunch Outlook to open the classic desktop version.
