Generating Documents from Templates

Let’s look at how to use our Clio templates to generate multiple documents at once using Faster Suite.

We’ll start by going to Documents on the Faster Ribbon, then we’ll click on the “From Templates” button to get to the Mass Document Automation interface.

1. Select Matters

On the first screen we will select what matters we would like to generate documents for.

There are logic filters at the top and a list of matters that meet the filters on the bottom.  This logic is pretty specific and you can filter by just about any field in Clio, so you can choose to only view matters with a client whose name matches what you type, starts with what you type, or contains what you type.  You can also filter by date or number fields using greater than, less than, or equal to qualifiers.  These are just some examples and there are many other ways to filter your matter list.

Once we’ve filtered our matter list, we can select specific matters by checking the box next to each one, or check the top box to select everything that matches our filters.

2. Select Templates

On the next screen we’ll select what templates to use to generate documents for the matters we selected.

You’ll notice that the templates are organized into folders related to each template’s document category in Clio so you can easily expand and collapse folders to view only the templates you want to generate documents from.

Just check the box next to each template to select them, keeping in mind that every document you select here will be generated for every matter we selected on the previous screen.  If we select ten matters and ten documents, we will actually be generating 100 documents in total.

3. Customize the Documents

On this screen we can choose a name for the generated documents and select whether to generate them as Word documents, PDFs, or both.

Again, the selections we make here will apply to every matter that a document is being generated for, so if we’re generating documents for multiple matters we should avoid using any matter specific information in the document names.

4. Generate the Documents

Now we can click Next to start generating the documents.  This process can take a bit, especially if we’re generating a lot of documents at once.

Once all documents are finished being generated, we can click the page icon next to each document to view that document, or click the folder icon next to each document to open the folder in Faster Drive where the document has been stored.
