Backup Clio Documents: Methods to Backup Clio Documents

Occasionally firms ask us how to backup all of the files and folders that they have stored in Clio. 

There are three different approaches that firms can take and the best approach depends on the exact requirements you are looking to fulfill. 

Approach #1: Clio's Amazon S3 Backup

 Our recommended approach is to configure your Clio account to automatically backup to an Amazon S3 storage account on a weekly basis. This can be configured by following these instructions from Clio's help center: https://support.clio.com/hc/en-us/articles/203319790-Data-Escrow 

The advantages of this process are: 

• It is automatic
• It is a native Clio solution

The disadvantages of this process are: 

• It will run once per week
• It requires a technical person to configure
• It provides a Clio Cloud > Amazon Clio backup (it does not backup to your local computers

Approach #2: Universal Migrator Clio Document Backup

The advantages of this process are: 

• It can be run at any time
• It provides a Clio Cloud to Local Storage Solution
• It can be leveraged by non-technical users

The disadvantages of this process are: 

• Running this tool is a manual process
• This tool does not export all Clio data
• It exports the latest version of all documents accessible by the current user that are exposed through Faster Drive. Contact the Universal Migrator team for more information on this tool.

Approach #3: Third-Party Backup Tools 

If neither of the other solutions fit your practice, then a third-party software like Allway Sync may be necessary. 

The advantages of this process are: 

• It is automatic
• You can back up to any location you can access in Windows
• Depending on the software, the sync may run both ways, so edits made in your backup can sync back to Clio

The disadvantages are:

• This solution has not been tested by Faster Law
• There is a cost associated with the additional software
• Third-party software will not export all Clio data. It exports the latest version of all documents accessible by the current user that are exposed through Faster Drive.
